Donauschicksale/ Danube Destinies/ Destine dunarene at the German Theater in Timisoara.

In July 2023, I had the privilege of directing Donauschicksale, an itinerant performance that explored the untold stories of Timisoara’s historical figures throughout the centuries. As part of the German State Theater's repertoire and the official Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture program, this show offered a unique, interactive tour of the city, beginning on July 7, 2023, at 19:30.

The performance guided residents and visitors through Timisoara’s rich and diverse history, highlighting unknown yet fascinating personalities who shaped the city. Through this site-specific, dramatized city tour, we illuminated significant, often overlooked, moments in Timisoara’s past. The goal was to reconnect the people of Timisoara with the city’s remarkable history, one that is full of contrasts and intricately tied to the wider story of Europe. As the European Capital of Culture in 2023, Timisoara once again shined as a cultural beacon, representing centuries of history, migration, and artistic evolution.
Donauschicksale underscored how art, culture, and education continually reshape and redefine a place, especially one as dynamic and multifaceted as Timisoara. The first performances took place on July 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2023, starting at the entrance of the German State Theatre on Alba Iulia Street. The cast included:
  • Bülent Özdil as Maximilian Emmanuel Fremaut
  • Richard Hladik as Maria Katharina
  • Daniela Török as Sarutya Hussun
  • Aida Olaru as Anna Maria Ferdinanda von Habsburg
  • Simona Vintilă as Hildegardis Wulff
  • Radu Brănici as Béla Bartók
  • Yannick Becker as Alexander Steinlein
  • Enikő Blénessy as Helga Tischler
The concept was crafted by Andrea Wolfer and Swantje Volkmann. I had the honor of directing the show, with the invaluable support of my assistant director, Daniel Ghidel. Additional credits include make-up by Bojita Ilici, speech training support by Ulrike Schulze (a.G.), and stage management by Cătălin Tănase.
This project was made possible through the collaboration with Dr. Swantje Volkmann, Cultural Officer for the Danube Region at the Danube Swabian Central Museum, and co-financed by the Mayor's Office of Timisoara and the Danube Office Ulm.

The process of directing Donauschicksale was challenging, particularly since I was directing my fellow actor colleagues, but it was ultimately a rewarding and joyful experience. The audience was pleasantly surprised, embracing this "out of the box" concept, quite literally as we took the performance out onto the streets. Despite having only two weeks for rehearsals, we managed to write, design costumes, and adapt locations. For the soundtrack of the show I choose only music from Béla Bartók, the Romanian/Hungarian composer and the final song I was glad Radu Brănici remixed it so skillfully into a modern version perfect for our show finale.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the German State Theatre for their trust and collaboration, making this intense journey possible. I’m also deeply thankful to the volunteers who ensured the safety of the audience during the walking tour. This project has reignited my passion for directorial work, and I am eager to take on more challenges in the future.
